Sciatica Treatment in Winnipeg
Sciatica is pain that radiates along your sciatic nerve, usually from your lower back through your buttock and down one leg. The good news: many cases respond well to conservative care.

What sciatica feels like
Sciatica pain usually radiates from the lower spine down through the buttock and the back of one thigh and calf, usually on one side. It can feel like a mild ache, sharp pain, burning, or an electric jolt. It is often worse with coughing, sneezing, or prolonged sitting.
Common signs include shooting or burning leg pain, numbness, tingling in the foot or toes, muscle weakness along the nerve pathway, and pain that is worse when sitting. Loss of bladder or bowel control is a medical emergency and should be assessed immediately.
What causes it
The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body. Most sciatica comes from pressure on the nerve root where it exits the spine. Common causes include lumbar herniated disc, lumbar spinal stenosis, piriformis syndrome, degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis, and pregnancy-related nerve compression.
How chiropractic helps
At your first visit, we take a full history, complete a neurological exam, and decide whether on-site X-rays are warranted. Treatment may combine spinal adjustments, soft-tissue therapy, targeted exercises, sitting and sleeping changes, and referral for medical imaging when needed.
We do not oversell. If we are not seeing measurable progress, we change the plan. If conservative care is not enough, we refer you appropriately.
Sciatica FAQs
- Can sciatica from a Winnipeg winter slip-and-fall be treated by a chiropractor?
- Often, yes. Falling on ice can irritate the sacroiliac joint or lumbar disc, which can trigger sciatica. We start with an exam and refer for imaging if there are signs of fracture or severe nerve damage.
- I am pregnant and getting sciatica pain. Is chiropractic safe?
- Yes, with appropriate pregnancy-modified positioning and technique. Side-lying adjustments, pillow support, and soft-tissue work are common during pregnancy. See our Pregnancy Chiropractic page for more.
- How long does it take to recover from sciatica?
- Many patients see meaningful improvement in four to six weeks, with full resolution often taking eight to twelve weeks. Disc-related sciatica can take longer. We re-evaluate as we go.
- Will I need an X-ray or MRI?
- We have digital X-rays on-site if your history or exam findings call for one. MRIs are not usually needed for first-line sciatica care, but we refer when symptoms include significant weakness, numbness, or poor response to treatment.
